Tips for Finding Investing Ideas

By: Bob Mutual

They say that a savvy investor can find ideas everywhere he looks. How can you learn great places for finding investing ideas? You might be surprised to learn that there are many practice places you can discover great investment opportunities and once you learn what they are and how to spot them, you will be well on your way to getting some of the greatest investing ideas ever.

A good place to start is with S&P guides. Each year Standard and Poor’s Large Cap, Mid Cap and Small Cap guides are released. These will give you full information including the company name, ticker symbol, industry, contact information and much more on a particular company or stock. Combined these guides have over 1500 companies for you to consider. You can surely find many great ideas in here.

Another strategy for finding investing ideas is to get out and get around. Take a trip to the local mall, gas station or even the grocery store. Take some paper with you and make notes of products you usually buy, popular products or brand names that you notice often in the stores. You can even look on the packaging to find out company contact information. You can then go online to find out more about that company’s stock and consider it as a possible investment opportunity.

Another way to find great investing ideas is to ask your family. If you have a spouse, children, parents or close friends, you can ask them questions about products and brands they love or use on a regular basis and use this to give you investment ideas. Take time to talk with your family about where they do their shopping, what brands they are most loyal to and other useful information to help you in finding possible investing ideas.

Check out the TV commercials. There are many great ideas which can come from TV, including new products, popular products, drugs and medications and more. Take notes when watching TV of products you can look up online later. You can also look in other places advertisements are found such as billboards, magazines and newspapers. You may be surprised at how often a good investing idea is right under your nose but you don’t usually pay attention to it.

If you want to be on your toes with finding investing ideas, it’s important that you always keep your mind open. When you are out and about and on your daily routine, remember to look for potential opportunities. Take a note pad with you or index cards and a pen so you can always write down potential ideas when you are out. Don’t wait for great idea to fall into your lap; go out there and seek them!
